After the flowers have faded, jewel-hued rose hips -- the fruit of a rose plant -- carry the beauty of the garden into fall. Here, mixed with eucalyptus fruit and leaves in pewter vessels, they put on an ebullient show.

Rose Hip Tip
The rose species produce some of the loveliest hips. The hips ripen after the flowers' petals fall off; like leaves on trees, rose hips start out green and turn vivid shades of red and orange, and the colder the weather gets, the more dramatic their hues become. Avoid deadheading for a full and colorful variety of hips as autumn sets in. When you cut them, just place them in water (no conditioning needed) and they'll stay vibrant and plump for about a week. Dried rose hips also make beautiful displays.
