Weigela is an long-favored garden plant named after a German botanist, Christian von Weigel. Always showy in spring, this shrub has been a staple of the garden landscape since the 1800s.

general maintenance:

Remove any dead branches. If necessary, thin dense growth by removing stems from the base about every 3 years.

pests/diseases:

Japanese beetles, scale insects, and verticillium wilt may occur.

controls:

Handpick Japanese beetles. For scale, spray with horticultural oil. For verticillium wilt, reduce soil moisture or remove severely diseased plants.

how to sow/plant:

Plant in spring or fall. Choose a sunny site with moist, well-drained soil and amend with well-rotted manure or compost. Set plants at same depth they were in their pots, spacing 6 feet apart. Water upon planting, and mulch to conserve moisture.

Monitor soil moisture all season. Feed after flowering with an all-purpose fertilizer, following package directions.
