'Climax' produces abundant sweet, dark-blue fruit on large, vigorous plants. Rabbiteye blueberries require fewer winter chill hours than highbush cultivars and and are better suited to warmer regions but require cross-pollination. 'Climax' is extremely productive and its berries ripen evenly. Blueberry foliage turns fiery red in fall, giving it great ornamental value as well.

did you know?

Blueberries are a great source of fiber and vitamin C, and according to recent USDA studies, are higher in antioxidants than broccoli, spinach, and kale. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, the unstable oxygen molecules associated with cancer and heart disease.

general maintenance:

In winter, prune twiggy growth from the base of plant and remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. For healthier plants and bigger harvests, remove flowers for first 2 years after planting. Do not heavily prune plants younger than 3 years old.

pests/diseases:

Birds may harvest fruit, and root rot and gray mold may occur.

controls:

Drape fruiting shrubs with bird netting to protect harvest from birds. To discourage root rot, choose a sharply drained site or plant in raised beds. Decrease watering and remove severely infected plants. To control gray mold, remove and destroy infected flowers and foliage, increase spacing between plants to improve air circulation, and reduce watering.

how to sow/plant:

In fall or early spring, choose a sunny, well-drained site, dig hole twice the size of the root ball, and amend with compost, well-rotted manure, or peat moss. Set out young plants making sure stem is placed slightly lower than it was in container. If using bare-root plants, spread roots out in planting hole, cover with soil to the base of the stem, and tamp down earth firmly. Water and mulch after planting.

water and fertilize:

Maintain soil moisture all season. Apply a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants monthly, following label directions.

garden hint:

'Climax' requires cross-pollination. Plant several different rabbiteye cultivars, like 'Premier' or 'Woodard,' in your garden to increase yield and lengthen the harvest season.
