did you know?

Rosemary, which grows wild along the seaside cliffs of southern Europe, was traditionally used in wedding ceremonies, either as wreaths or in the bride's bouquet to symbolize remembrance and love. In Europe, the dead were buried with the herb, as a sign they would not be forgotten. Even today, loved ones are given rosemary when setting out into the world.

symbolism:

Rosemary is a symbol of remembrance, friendship, and love.

general maintenance:

To discourage leggy, woody growth and maintain preferred growing habit, cut tips frequently when plants are small.

pests/diseases:

Botrytis blight, leaf spot, and several root rots may occur.

controls:

To control leaf spot and root rots, remove infected plants and reduce soil moisture. For botrytis blight, remove diseased flowers and foliage.

how to sow/plant:

Start with new plants, rooted stem cuttings in August or propagate by layering, and plant at least 4 feet apart in full sun and average soil. In Zones 7 and colder, plant in containers filled with coarse, light soil; overwinter indoors in a cool, sunny room with high humidity, and reduce watering.

water and fertilize:

Allow to soil dry between watering; excess water and fertilization result in leggy, woody growth, and eventual death for plants in the ground. For container plants, ensure uniform moisture, and don't let soil get too dry between watering.
