Creeping phlox: Phlox stolonifera

In spring, creeping phlox produces clusters of star-shaped blooms in colors ranging from white and blue to pink and purple. Spreading slowly over time, this shade-loving species, which creeps by sending out stolons (stems) that root where they touch the ground, can be used as a ground cover.

did you know?

Phlox is native to the moist riverside habitats of the eastern United States and has been cultivated since colonial times. The word phlox is Greek for "flame," a reference to the sprays of flowers held above the foliage.

general maintenance:

Deadhead blooms to encourage flowering. Shear plants after frost.

pests/diseases:

Caterpillars, leaf miners, powdery mildew, stem canker, Southern blight, and leaf spot may occur.

controls:

To control leaf spot and fungal diseases, remove diseased plants and reduce soil moisture. To prevent powdery mildew, increase space between plants and avoid watering leaves directly. Remove leaves damaged by leaf miners. Handpick caterpillars.

how to sow/plant:

Choose a partly shady, well-drained site and amend with compost or well-rotted manure. Set young plants at same depth they grew in pots and about 1 foot apart. Water after planting, and mulch to conserve moisture.

water and fertilize:

Maintain soil moisture all season. Feed monthly with a water-soluble fertilizer, following label directions.
