Mammillaria cactus: Mammillaria zeilmanniana
The gray-green mammillaria cactus grows in clusters of globe-shaped, hairy, spiny stems that bear bright-pink, violet, or white flowers in summer. Unlike most other cacti, the spines of this cactus are borne on tubercles (bumps) rather than ribs. Grow mammillaria as a houseplant in bright light. Profile
did you know? The sharp spines of the cactus are actually modified leaves that have evolved to be hard and sharp to repel predators and to conserve water. general maintenance:Repot young plants annually but only to a pot just slightly larger, as cactus prefer to be pot bound. pests/diseases:Mealy bugs can be a problem on new growth. controls:Spray mealy bugs with insecticidal soap, following label directions. how to sow/plant:Grow in a pot filled with cactus potting mix. Set plants at the same level they were in previous pot. The soil level should be 1/2 to 1 inch below the rim of the pot to provide a water reservoir when watering. water and fertilize:In spring, treat as an ordinary houseplant: Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. In summer and fall, allow soil to dry out between waterings. In winter, provide just enough water so plant doesn't shrivel. Feed monthly throughout growing season with fertilizer formulated for houseplants, following label directions. Stop feeding in winter, when the plant is resting; resume feeding in spring as days lengthen. garden hint:When repotting this cactus, wear sturdy leather gloves to protect your hands from the plant's sharp spines. features:
