Saucer magnolia: Magnolia x soulangiana Lennei

Emerging 'Lennei' has large, dark-purple-magenta flowers that have rounded petals with a white interior. It blooms in late spring before the unfurling of its foliage, which matures from coppery to dark green. The flowers are goblet shaped and dense on an irregularly shaped, picturesque tree. One of the oldest and darkest-flowering magnolias, the cultivar was named around 1850 for a German botanist.

did you know?

In China, magnolias have been cultivated for their medicinal qualities since at least 1083 A.D. Hsin-i, a Chinese medicine prepared from flower buds of various magnolia species, is widely used in many Asian countries to treat headaches, allergies, and other conditions.

symbolism:

In China, magnolia blossoms are a symbol of candor and purity.

general maintenance:

Prune damaged and weak stems, keeping crown open.

pests/diseases:

Leaf spots and mildew may occur but will not harm the plant.

how to sow/plant:

In Zones 6–7, plant in early spring; in Zones 8–9, plant in early fall. Start with container-grown plants. Choose a sunny site with fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil, and set plants at the same level they grew in their pots, taking care not to damage fleshy tree roots. Water upon planting, and mulch to conserve moisture.

water and fertilize:

Monitor soil moisture all season. Each spring, feed with slow-release balanced fertilizer, following package directions, and spread leaf mulch beneath tree canopy at least 6 inches away from trunk.

garden hint:

Magnolias develop beautiful winter forms and attractive gray bark. Avoid damaging trunks with lawn mowers or string trimmers, as wounds to bark may encourage disease and even kill the tree if severe. This can be avoided by carefully mulching a 3- to 4-foot area around plant.
