Weeping lantana: Lantana montevidensis

Often grown as an annual bedding plant, this small shrub bears clusters of lavender-to-violet flowers with yellow throats from summer until fall. Its dense mat of deeply veined, dark-green leaves softens the edges of borders and containers, while its blooms attract bees and butterflies. Easy-care weeping lantana thrives in warm, dry summers.

general maintenance:

Pinch young plants to encourage branching. Where not hardy, remove and discard plants after frost, or overwinter indoors in a cool, sunny location.

pests/diseases:

Lantana is relatively carefree when grown as an annual.

how to sow/plant:

Choose a sunny, well-drained site and set out plants at the same depth as they were in original container, spacing 1?3 feet apart. Water upon planting.

water and fertilize:

Monitor soil moisture all season. Do not overwater. Apply a slow-release fertilizer at planting or all-purpose water-soluble fertilizer monthly, following label directions.

garden hint:

Propagate lantana by taking cuttings. Cut a 3-to 5-inch section from the tip of the stem, remove flowers and lower leaves and dip in rooting hormone. Place cutting in a mix of soiless potting medium and perlite. Provide warmth and light, and mist frequently to increase humidity. In several weeks, the rooted cuttings will be ready to transplant into the garden.
