Cosmos: Cosmos bipinnatus Sensation White

'Sensation White' is an upright cosmos with feathery, finely cut, bright-green foliage. From early summer to frost, the large, fluted petals form silky, pure-white flowers up to 4 inches across. Selections of the Sensation series, including this one, are grown for their pure colors. Cosmos is very easy to grow, and its long stems and showy flowers make it well suited for container planting and fresh-cut arrangements.

did you know?

Cosmos is native to Mexico, but the name is derived from the Greek word for ?beautiful? or ?ornament.?

general maintenance:

Deadhead, removing each stem as well as its spent flowers, to increase bud production and ensure continued flowering.

pests/diseases:

Aphids and powdery mildew may occur.

controls:

Regularly hose off aphids with a directed stream of water, or apply insecticidal soap, following label directions. To discourage powdery mildew, space plants for adequate air circulation, and avoid wetting leaves when watering. Pick off diseased leaves where practical, and remove and destroy severely infected plants.

how to sow/plant:

Plant in spring. Direct sow when danger of frost has passed, or start indoors 4?6 weeks before last frost. Sow 1/4 inch deep, and thin to (or transplant) 12?18 inches apart. Cosmos transplants easily. Water upon planting, and mulch to conserve water.

water and fertilize:

Maintain uniform moisture throughout season. Fertilize biweekly with a diluted solution of soluble fertilizer. Do not overfertilize, because this will lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of increased flowering.

garden hint:

To promote flower production, plant cosmos in soil that is not too fertile as rich soil promotes foliage at the expense of flowers. (Plant taller cosmos in a wind-protected location, and stake if needed.)
