Cacti stems function as organs for water storage, and many have parallel ribs that minimize the portion of each stem that is exposed to light.

pests/diseases:

Root rot may occur.

controls:

To control root rot, increase drainage by adding horticultural grit to soil or potting mix, and reduce watering.

how to sow/plant:

Where hardy, choose a sunny, sharply drained spot in soil that has low fertility but is humus rich. Or grow indoors in containers filled with cactus potting mix. Set plants at the same depth they grew in pots. Water upon planting.

water and fertilize:

Indoors, water when soil surface is dry to touch. During growing season, apply balanced fertilizer monthly, following label directions. Do not water or fertilize from fall until spring; resume in spring as days lengthen. Watering and fertilization are not necessary outdoors.
