did you know?

Angelica is thought to flower every year on May 8, the feast day for St. Michael the Archangel, hence its name, Angelica's use as a protective herb with healing powers and an ability to ward off the effects of witches, poisons, and the plague further connected it to the angelic realm.

general maintenance:

To grow angelica as a perennial, pinch flower heads before seeds develop.

pests/diseases:

Powdery mildew, leaf spot, aphids, snails, slugs, and leaf miners may occur.

controls:

To avoid powdery mildew, don't water from above; to treat it, remove affected leaves. For leaf spot, remove affected plants and reduce soil moisture. Hose off aphids with a strong stream of water, spray with horticultural oil, or introduce beneficial insect predators. Handpick slugs and snails; use beer traps, or spread diatomaceous earth. For leaf miners, remove affected leaves.

how to sow/plant:

Start with new plants, or grow from fresh seed. Direct sow by scratching into soil once seed is ripe in summer. In early fall, thin or transplant to 3 feet apart. Water upon planting, and mulch to keep soil evenly moist.

water and fertilize:

Monitor soil moisture all season. Supplemental fertilization is not required, but amending soil with well-rotted manure or compost before planting is recommended.
