Ready to Surf

Our winner is Anna Wohlgemuth and her golden retriever,Yukon, from Everett, Washington. "My husband, Rob, and I knew that we wanted to bring a dog into our family, but we had a few requirements: LARGE, enjoys long walks on the beach, mountains, and running trails. We researched breeds and decided that a golden's personality would be perfect. Yukon is about 5 months old in the photo and is now just over 16 months. He is the best surfing and hiking partner we could ever ask for. This photo was taken in the fall of 2008 at Oswald Beach in Oregon, only the second time Yukon had been surfing with us. That is me holding the surf board while Yukon tries to follow me out into the surf."

"During the summer, she gets to go to Lake Michigan early on Saturday and Sunday mornings. She starts bringing us her water toy at the end of March, trying to get out there as early as possible every year since we adopted her. She also loves swimming in the river at her grandparents' cottage. Doesn't she look happy?"

Babs, a chicken from Mobile, Alabama, went to the beach with her owners every summer, "and probably enjoyed it more than anybody else," writes carolkmb. "She loved to take long walks on the beach with us, following along just like a dog. Needless to say, she got lots and lots of stares and comments from passersby. Her favorite time at the beach was sunset, when tiny little ghost crabs scurry all over the sand preparing for their night of foraging. Babs would chase and eat these ghost crabs until it was too dark to see them anymore. It was absolutely hilarious to see her darting back and forth and from side to side in serious pursuit of her newfound delicacy. She would also eat as many minnows as you could provide her by seining in the shallow surf. Needless to say, she would have fish or crab breath after each foray! Babs is now deceased, and we all miss her a lot. We do have two dogs now that go along with us to the beach every summer."
