Colorful Bookcase

Give a traditional hutch or bookcase a burst of color -- and make use of space that usually goes to waste -- by installing a cloth-covered bulletin board inside.

Wrapped in linen, the board will be dressed up enough for any part of the house. And it makes a great practical surface for pinning up postcards, thank-you notes, favorite photos, and any other mementos you would like to display or organize.

Tools and Materials
Ruler
Homasote recycled-paper fiberboard (available at home-supply stores)
Pinking shears
Linen
Staple gun
Adhesive Velcro strips

Bulletin Board How-To
1. Measure your space, and have a piece of Homasote cut 1/4 inch smaller all around. Cut a piece of linen that's 2 inches larger all around. Lay the linen on a flat surface; center the board on top of the cloth. Pull the fabric over one side of the board, and staple it in place. Repeat on the opposite side, pulling fabric taut, then on the other sides.

2. Flip the board over; affix Velcro along the perimeter of the underside, about 1/8 inch from edge. Affix Velcro around the perimeter of the area to be covered on the bookshelf or hutch, measuring in 1/2 inch. Attach the board.
