Presents in Pots

Potted orchids, forced amaryllis, and topiaries make lovely gifts, but most nurseries sell them tied to plastic stakes in unattractive pots. To dress up the plants as gifts, repot them in handsome porcelain containers that have drainage holes and accompanying saucers. Replace the stakes with water sprouts (upright shoots that develop from branches pruned from dormant fruit trees), pussy willow stems, or dogwood or willow branches, and tie handwritten care instructions to the pot or to a chopstick inserted in the soil.
