Indoor Shutters

Modern windows no longer accommodate outdoor shutters, but that's no reason to pass shutters by at flea markets or secondhand shops. With their clean lines and handmade details, old wooden shutters are weathered beauties as striking as any wooden antiques. One solution is to bring outdoor shutters indoors. The long rectangular shape is often the perfect fit for the doorway of a linen closet or hall cupboard. These shutters, with their hand-cut evergreen design, were discovered at an upstate New York flea market. One of the pair was painted white, then hinged to a narrow cupboard using vintage hardware. A set of antique shutters can also be recycled as doors to a simple homemade armoire. Any way you use them, you salvage a piece of Americana.
