Father's Day Surprise Boxes2 Ratings (See All) ![]() More than likely, your dad has saved somewhere every construction-paper greeting card and macaroni-encrusted gift you've ever made for him. Homemade presents are still fun for him to receive -- but it's just as easy to make them elegant and useful. Here's how to turn a plain wooden box into an attractive gift: Paint box inside and out with acrylic primer; let dry; then add a coat of latex paint. Cut paper in a contrasting color 1/8 inch smaller all around than dimensions of box top. Cut a strip of paper long enough to wrap around all four sides and 1/8 inch narrower than the height of the sides; divide this strip in two so the box's lid will be able to separate from the base. Brush craft glue onto back of paper, and smooth in place. Attach self-adhesive photo corners to box's top, and insert a photograph. Line box with vellum, and fill with Dad's favorite candies, nuts, or another small gift. For a simpler gift, fill a plain box with surprises, wrap a wide sheet of decorative paper around it, and tie with waxed twine.
