After all these years and thousands of holiday cookies, we still find stenciling to be one of the prettiest -- and easiest -- ways to decorate.
Materials
  • Stiff paper (such as an envelope)
  • Craft punches in holiday designs
  • Baked, cooled cookies, such as our Chocolate Stenciled Cookies or Gingerbread Stenciled Cookies
  • Small paintbrush
  • Royal Icing
  • Confectioners' sugar or luster dust
  • Small sieve

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup packed dark-brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cloves
