Bird Mask

Steps:7
Elaborate masks worn at Venice's famed "Carnevale" inspired these avian creations. The long nose on this papier-mache mask becomes a bird's beak, surrounded by crepe-paper plumage in gray or yellow. This mask calls for two types of crepe paper: thick florist crepe paper in gold, and regular (or fine) crepe paper in the remaining colors.
Materials
  • Papier-mache mask, mardigrasoutlet.com
  • Foam brush
  • Acrylic paint in a base color (gray or yellow) that matches the feathers to be added, misterart.com
  • Gold florist crepe paper, black crepe paper, and gray crepe paper, castleintheair.biz and misterart.com
  • Glue stick
  • Broad scallop scissors
  • Scissors
  • 2 ribbon ties to replace elastic (we used twill tape)

Pumpkins with Scary Etched Silhouettes

Steps:6
This sideboard tableau intersperses luminous pumpkins with a decanter of wine, a stand with fruit, and other objects evocative of Edgar Allan Poe and his tales of horror.
Materials
  • Keyhole saw to cut the opening
  • Plaster scraper, fleshing tool, or sharp, sturdy spoon for scooping out the pulpy flesh and thinning the walls
  • Awl, for transferring the template patterns
  • Narrow-blade and wide-blade linoleum cutters for etching designs
  • Miniature saw for carving designs
  • String lights
  • Glass jar
  • Template

Vile-Varmint Pumpkins

Steps:5
Assemble a tableau straight out of a spooky movie. The witch's latest shipment of animals seems to have escaped their crates, and now they're inhabiting these ghostly green pumpkins. Slashing -- oops, carving -- the huge squashes is a cinch, thanks to serpent and toad templates (scrape out the flesh around the patterns). Set the pumpkins on the crates, and then keep your distance.
Materials
  • Pumpkin
  • Keyhole saw or a serrated knife
  • Fleshing tool
  • Masking tape
  • Awl or a large pin
  • Linoleum cutter with a No. 2 blade
  • Wide-blade (No. 5) linoleum cutter
  • Wood gouge
  • For lighting the pumpkin: white string lights and a glass jar, or use battery-operated lights or small flashlights
  • Snake template
  • Toad template

Raven Costume

Steps:2
Our stark yet stylized bird costume is easily put together with just a few simple embellishments attached to an ordinary black hoodie. The hooked beak is made of stiff black felt, as are the mischievous eyes. Feathery fringe sewn on the arms creates tufted wings; feathers arranged around the eyes give the raven a tousled look.
Materials
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Stiff black felt
  • Yellow felt
  • White felt
  • Feathered fringe
  • Fabric glue
  • Plain black hooded sweatshirt
  • Dark pants and shoes
  • Beak Template

Detective and Hound Costume

Steps:8
The detective and his trusty hound follow the scent to the next crime scene. Their matching plaid capes (modeled after the attire of Sherlock Holmes) are sewn from inexpensive suiting fabric with a simple pattern. Earflaps made from cloth and bias tape transform a pair of black baseball caps into a deerstalker hat.
Materials
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • About 2 yards of suiting fabric
  • 1/2 yard fusible webbing
  • 1/2 yard black felt
  • 10 yards of 1/2-inch black bias tape
  • Disappearing-ink fabric pen
  • 2 plain black fitted baseball caps
  • Tailor's chalk
  • Fabric glue
  • Magnifying glass
  • Child's cape template
  • Dog's cape template
  • Collar, bill, and ear flap templates
