New York Times best-selling author Susan Orlean recommends thinking of travel as amateur anthropology.
To make the most of your time in any given place, try to venture off the beaten path in search of a more authentic experience full of local flavor. For example, when visiting Paris, the thing you remember most may not be the Eiffel Tower itself, but the musicians you watched outside of the museum. In fact, one of Susan's favorite travel memories is of simply having dinner with a regular family while in Japan.
