We used "lazy daisy" stitches to make the poinsettias.

Tools and Materials
Small embroidery hoop
Embroidery needle
7-mm silk embroidery ribbon
Embroidery floss

Ribbon Embroidery Poinsettia How-To:
1.Turn stocking inside out, and position an embroidery hoop over the space your flower will go.

2.To make one bract, thread a needle with ribbon. Pass needle up through back of fabric (A) and down through (B) as shown; do not pierce ribbon. Pull until loop is 3/4 inch long.

3. Repeat to create a circle of five loops, spaced about 1/4 inch apart. Tie ribbon on wrong side of fabric.

4. Thread needle with one strand of matching floss, and tack down each loop with one stitch: Pass needle up through back of fabric and through tip of loop; reinsert needle into fabric close to where it emerged (C); pull tight.

5.Iron to flatten loops.

6. Repeat for a second circle of five bracts within the first; these should fall between and slightly overlap first layer. Add 3 to 4 green leaves, using same technique. Tuck the base of each leaf behind the bracts.

7. Add six buds in poinsettia centers by stitching French knots: Thread needle with floss, and pass up through back of fabric. Pinch floss at midpoint using the hand not holding the needle. Place the needle behind the floss, just above where it emerged from the fabric. Holding the needle parallel to fabric, wrap floss (away from you) twice around the tip of the needle. Reinsert the needle close to where it emerged. Pull the needle through, holding the wound floss together to secure the knot.
