Lobster Baby Costume

You can create viewer Isabelle Ortley's fun and adorable baby Halloween costumes at home. Although the general processes to create Isabelle's original costumes follow, no two costumes are exactly alike. In the end, any costume you design will be memorable and guaranteed to be loved by your friends, family, and, of course, baby!

Hot glue gun
Fake vegetables
Serving platter
1-inch foam
1/2 yard pant weight fabric
Small butter container

Lobster Baby Costume How-To
1. Trace a shape of the lobster body, two claps, and six long, skinny legs on double-folded muslin. Cut these pieces out. Sew each side together, leaving space to turn each piece inside out.

2. Stuff the pieces with cotton or plastic bags, and hand-sew the opening closed.

3. Trace horizontal lines on the body of the lobster and sew them with the sewing machine to add shape and further dimension to the body.

4. From a doubled piece of 8-by-8-inch pant-weight fabric, cut out two 8-by-8-inch rectangles. Sew the rectangles onto the middle of each side of the lobster body; these will hold the top of the costume to the base and create some height to the costume.

5. Apply a layer of red paint to all of these pieces. To add texture, sponge on a darker shade of red, some brown, and black all over these pieces. Let dry overnight. Add details with puffy paint.

6. Hand-sew red pipe cleaners to the head of the lobster for the antennae.

7. For the platter: To create the foam platter base, cut out an oval shape from the 1-inch foam, which will serve as the padding for the baby. Using 1/2 yard pant weight fabric, cut out two oval shapes, each about 1 inch larger in size around.

8. Cover the back of one of the pieces of fabric with Fabri-tac glue, leaving one inch around the perimeter of the fabric with no glue. Apply this piece to the foam. Let dry.

9. Take your second fabric oval and put it together with the foam-fabric glued piece, right sides facing each other. Sew all around, leaving 4 to 6 inches open so you can turn inside out. Iron the piece to flatten. Hand-sew closed. Paint the plate the color of your choice, or paint a design on it.

10. Finish the costume by decorating the plate with silk flowers and fake vegetables. To create the butter sauce, fill a container with a small amount of stuffing. Mix white glue with yellow acrylic paint. Pour in a thin layer, about 1/4 inch on top of the stuffing. Let dry for two days.

Note: Be sure to use nontoxic paint and glue in this project, as some babies like to chew on the costumes. When placing your baby on a table, be sure that the sides of the table are protected, and always watch that your child does not roll. When using berries and other garnishes, be aware of any choking hazards.
