Kids' Mitten Sweaters

Make a one-of-a-kind sweater for your child using these simple guidelines.

Tools and Materials
Mitten Template
Sweater
Felt
Pins
Sewing needle/thread
Yarn
Pencil

Mitten Sweater How-To
1. Trace one of your child's hands or use the mitten template. Cut out the shape and trace it onto a piece of felt. Pin the felt mitten onto the sweater and hand-sew around the perimeter with a blanket stitch, leaving wrist section open to form a pocket. Repeat the process.

2. To make the blanket-stitch binding, first anchor your knot between the felt mitten and the sweater by taking a stitch through the front of the sweater. Bring the needle to the front through the back, piercing both the felt and the sweater, 1/8 inch from the edge of the felt. Insert the needle front to back, 1/8 inch to the right and 1/8 inch in from the edge. Bring the needle out to the edge, keeping yarn loop under the needle. Continue stitching, working from left to right, until felt mitten is sewn all the way around, leaving open the wrist section.
