Handmade Jewelry

Put your personal touch on all kinds of accessories, and they'll really stand out. It takes only a few steps and some ordinary materials such as fabric, paper, paint, string, and glue to create a bunch of charming one-of-a-kind trinkets.

Nature Walk Bracelet
Make a fashionable wrist cuff with treasures picked up on walks through the woods or on the beach.

1. Cut a piece of wide masking or colored electrical tape to fit around your wrist, plus 1 inch.

2. Arrange and press collected items onto sticky side of tape. With sticky side up, fold ends under a couple of times. Cover sticky side of bracelet with plastic wrap, and trim excess. With a small hole punch or needle, make one hole through each end; tie a 5-inch piece of string through each hole.Tie bracelet around wrist.

Butterfly Bobby Pin
Fashioned from scraps of patterned and plain fabrics, this beautiful little butterfly loves to rest on a young girl's locks. Choose a decorative fabric for the front of the barrette and a coordinating solid color fabric for the back.

What You'll Need:
-- Scissors
-- Fabric pen
-- Card stock
-- Bobby pins
-- Pipe cleaner
-- Fusible webbings
-- Plain fabric
-- Patterned fabric

How to Make It:
1. Draw a butterfly shape on card stock; cut out. Put fusible webbing between patterned and plain fabric; iron to bond them together. With fabric pen, trace template shape onto ironed fabrics; cut out.

2. Fold a pipe cleaner in half over middle. Slide a bobby pin onto the pipe cleaner in the back.

3. Twist pipe cleaner to secure. Trim ends of pipe cleaner so they aren't too long. Bend the trimmed ends to form antennae.

Paper Bead Jewelry
These necklaces are made out of beads formed by rolling paper along a toothpick. We used origami paper, but you could also use wrapping paper or magazine clippings.

What You'll Need:
-- Origami paper (4-by-4-inch squares)
-- Ruler
-- Pencil
-- Toothpick
-- Craft glue
-- Paintbrush

How to Make It:
1. Each 4-by-4-inch square will make seven 1-inch beads. On one edge of each square, mark a point at 1-inch intervals. On the opposite side, mark points at 1/2 inch, 1 1/2 inches, 2 1/2 inches, and 3 1/2 inches, which will be the tips of four triangles. Connect the points using a ruler and pencil to form triangles, and cut out.

2. For each triangle, place colored side of paper down, and start rolling from the wide end along a toothpick (use one a bit longer than the base of triangle) for about 1/2 inch. Spread glue along the rest of the triangle with a paintbrush, then finish rolling until the end. Slide bead off the toothpick, and let dry.

3. Cut a piece of string to desired length of necklace, and knot 1 inch from the end. Slip the beads onto the string; tie ends together, and trim.
