Felted Stone Paperweight

For artful paperweights, smooth stones are wrapped with colorful string or felted with brightly dyed roving, which is combed, unspun wool with an exceptionally soft feel.

Choose stones that are any size you like. While small ones make great paperweights, large ones can be used as doorstops.

Tools and Materials
Predyed roving, available at yarn and knitting-supply stores
Stones
Sewing thread to match color of roving
Nylon stocking (or knee-high)
Liquid soap
Warm water
Scissors

Felted Stone Paperweight How-To
1. Open roving and wrap a layer around a stone.

2. Use sewing thread to secure the roving to the stone, wrapping it around several times.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 several times until the stone is covered. Then add a final layer of roving.

4. Carefully slip the stone into the nylon stocking. Knot tightly, making sure not to catch any wool fibers in the knot.

5. Dip nylon-wrapped stone into warm soapy water and, using your hands, rub the surface for 8 to 10 minutes.

6. Rinse the stone with tap water until water runs clear. With scissors, cut open the stocking, and remove the stone. If it isn't felted, repeat steps 4 and 5 once more, then rinse. If some part of the stone is still exposed, simply add another layer of roving, and repeat steps 4 and 5.
