Denim Coverall Dress

This idea comes from fashion editor Katie Hatch, who loves finding inexpensive and chic solutions for summer. "I was in the farm store in Napa, Idaho, and came across a pair of coveralls and decided there and then I had to make a dress out of them."  Now you can too.

Tools and Materials
Pair of coveralls (the Herringbone pair pictured here can be ordered at automotiveworkwear.com.)
Scissors
Needle and thread

Coverall Dress How-To
1. Lay out your coveralls on a table or flat work surface. Tip: Buy them longer than you think you will need to ensure a good skirt length. Ours were 44 inches long. Another good idea is to prewash the coveralls a few times before you assemble the dress.

2. When they come out of the dryer, they will have a slightly distressed look -- "perfect for a casual summer dress," says Katie.

3. Cut off the legs with scissors (measure down 20 inches from the coverall waistband).

5. Cut along inside seams of both legs. (this will separate the back of the skirt from the front.)

6. Fold extra fabric in to create a smooth seam for the skirt. Pin in place.

7. Stitch on the front of the skirt from the bottom of the hem to the fly.

8. Repeat the stitching on the back side. Cut off any excess fabric on the inside.

9. Fold up bottom edge twice to make a hem. Top stitch a hem.
