Damask Stockings

Turkey red damask, a two-tone vintage fabric, appears both familiar and exotic at the same time. Stockings made from the material showcase its reversible pattern.

Damask Stockings How-To
1. Enlarge or reduce the template to desired size on a photocopier. (The stockings pictured are longer and narrower than the template.) Pin the template to wrong side of fabric. Trace two stockings (positioned as mirror images) onto fabric with tailor's chalk. Cut out both pieces.

2. Machine-stitch around the stocking from notch to notch, wrong sides out, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

3. So seams will lay smoothly around curved edges of stocking, cut notches to about 1/16 inch from seam at ankle, toe, and heel.

4. Turn stocking right side out. Stitch the pieces together from notch to top of stocking on each side. Press cuff seams open. Turn stocking inside out, and hand-stitch a 1/2-inch hem around rim of cuff. Turn stocking right side out, and fold cuff down.
