Cutting Canned Tomatoes

Use kitchen shears to cut canned tomatoes, without removing them from the can. It will save you time and spare you the mess.

In the Can
Instead of crushing tomatoes with your fingers or a spoon, try using your kitchen shears and cut them up right in the can. Do the same if you need canned diced tomatoes and don't have any around.

Clean Shears
Make sure your shears are clean to avoid any cross-contamination, especially if they are poultry shears. (Even better, use your poultry shears for poultry only, and have another pair of shears for other kitchen tasks.)
