Carpet Care Tips

A carpet in the home is often a significant investment, but it's constantly subject to the major and minor abuses of daily wear and tear. Try as you might, your carpet wont remain pristine forever, but if you follow this advice, it will always look the best it can.

The most basic tip is to institute a no-dirt policy when it comes to your carpets. A no-shoes rule is always effective, but you should at least make sure there are doormats at each entrance to your home. It's essential to vacuum frequently and thoroughly (Vacuum high-traffic areas daily, less-travelled spots at least twice a week) and to change the direction in which you push the vacuum. Going over high-traffic areas five times per cleaning will ensure that most of the dirt is removed.

If any furniture rests on the carpet, be sure it gets moved occasionally and that you never forget to use coasters under the furniture's legs -- especially if the legs are on casters or rollers. Area rugs that rest on a carpet should be moved regularly and the pile underneath restored; if the carpet is cleaned, make sure the area rug is colorfast before it's placed back down.

Bring professional cleaners in every six months if you have children, and every 12 to 18 months if you don't. In between cleanings, be sure to attack any spills and stains as soon as they occur. Common stains usually dont require any liquid cleaners stronger than water. Use as little water as possible, avoiding oxygen stain removers as they can affect the carpet's color, and blot them clean instead of rubbing or brushing.
