Renee Claire Bertrand
Tell us about your business.Renee Claire discovered the joy of fashion as a child in Ontario, Canada, when sewing with her sisters was a delightful diversion during long cold winters. Enchanted by the California lifestyle, she moved to Los Angeles after college, where she established the Renee Claire label of dresses and coats. The designer switched to sleepwear in 1999 when she sensed a new opportunity, and her first Bedhead collection found instant success. Since then she has continued to grow and refine her line of glamorous loungewear, which is sold in more than 1,500 boutiques, department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, and leading hotels worldwide.
Tell us about your workspace, shop, or studio.Bedhead has a lovely studio space in the State enterprise zone in South Los Angeles. Bedhead purchased a wonderful bow truss building about a year ago. The building faces seven small cottages and the building was a total eyesore, never painted, surrounded by a fence with barbed wire, no landscaping etc. It needed major TLC and we were up for the task. In a very few months we renovated, my husband planted a wonderful drought resistant Australian garden, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds galore. We are proud to drive in and experience this wonderful place to create, every day. It is as colorful as our pajamas are! We design, ship and play here.
What inspires you?I love this question as many things come to mind. I am always on super alert for anything with color combinations that might be added to our vast archive. It may appear in a plate that is served to us, it might show up in a vintage dress in a window, it might be a painting we viewed at the Getty or the Hammer Museum.
What makes your business stand out?Prints, prints, prints and fine tailoring details, such as pockets and piping. The goods are made to last!
What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur?Keep your vision focused, work weekends, and keep your eyes open to ideas and opportunities.
What does American Made mean to you?Bedhead has been American made for 17 years. The most exciting part is the give back to the community. When you have 70 local craftsman sewing away, along with 20-25 employees, in the workspace a lot of capital flows back to the community.
