Savory-flavored nuts have been one of my go to snacks for as long as I can remember. As an aspiring chef I was trying to figure out a food business to start while munching on some cashews last summer. It dawned on me that there are mostly sweet flavored nut butters but not really savory-flavors. I headed downstairs to the kitchen, poured the bag in my food processor and was pleasantly surprised by how good the savory nut butter tasted. From there I started experimenting with different flavors and by November of 2013, just four months after I came up with the idea, Eliot's Adult Nut Butters was launched. Our launch flavors of Spicy Thai Peanut Butter, Garam Masala Peanut Butter and Honey Chipotle Peanut Butter are quite the trio. By February we got into a local chain in Portland, Oregon and by the end of July we are in 18 stores in Portland, Eugene, and Vancouver, WA including three Whole Foods. The versatility of our nut butters makes breakfast, dinner and dessert an exciting treat.

I currently produce out of a commercial kitchen in Portland, Oregon using an industrial food processor. It is a small batch process making 50 jars at a time. This allows for a high degree of quality control and ensures that every batch meets our high standards.

What inspires you?

As an aspiring chef, exciting flavors and high quality food make every day an adventure. Being able to produce a product that helps people to make their everyday lives a little more flavorful is very rewarding. Our fans continue to amaze me with their inventions and creativity with our nut butters. The beauty of our product is that our bold flavors enable the consumer to making an incredibly delicious and unique PB&J just by opening one of our jars. The same act of opening a jar also leads to quick and tasty Spicy Thai Peanut Noodles, Garam Masala Peanut Butter Cookies or Honey Chipotle Peanut Butter Wings! Helping people to elevate their everyday meals by creating a high quality product is a rewarding and exciting experience. Hearing customers wanting more flavors and nut butters also helps to keep me inspired to keep pushing forward to both keep up our quality standards and to create new and exciting flavors.

What makes your business stand out?

Eliot's Adult Nut Butters is the only nut butter company in the US exclusively making savory-flavored nut butters. This focus helps steer customers to our unique line of nut butters. Our flavors provide a great value proposition for customers as they are dual use. They can be used in both savory and sweet recipes and uses. For breakfast, dinner, a snack or dessert, the options for their use are practically endless. The same jar of Garam Masala can be used on apples, carrots, oatmeal, breakfast smoothie, oatmeal or in peanut butter cookies. Our Spicy Thai Peanut Butter makes an incredible PB&J, easy and delicious Spicy Thai peanut noodles, a sauce for broccoli or lettuce wraps, or bold homemade chocolate peanut cups. Lastly the Honey Chipotle Peanut Butter makes your breakfast toast spicy and a touch sweet, great sliders with pickles and bacon, and incredible rice crispy treats. The ability to elevate the ordinary into the extraordinary by just opening one of jars can't be beat.

What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur?

Taking risks is scary but is the only way to move forward. If starting a business isn't a little scary you are probably doing it wrong. You will also make mistakes but the key is to learn from them and to try make them as small as possible. Lastly, your product will never be perfect so waiting for every aspect to be perfect will hold you back from releasing your product. Having something you can be proud of and knowing how you will improve it is a great starting point to get sales and feedback from consumers.

What does American Made mean to you?

American Made to me reflects the commitment to creative, innovative, high quality products. American made products take a lot of pride in being the best and striving to carve a place for local, unique products. By taking part in this idea we are helping make the US and the world a better place. Taking risks to push standards and categories forward is the American way of doing things. Just because something hasn't been done before, American made products are not afraid to explore new markets or to expand on the options in an existing market. Also knowing something is American made really gives it a stamp of care that often cannot be duplicated. Knowing something is American made gives you a peace of mind knowing that good, hard-working people put their blood, sweat and tears into creating a great product. That commitment and dedication are part of what make American made products so great.
