Neva Kelly & Frederick Kelly

Elmira, New York
My husband and I have designed a tip-over resistant tomato cage that encourages the plant to grow up rather than out and makes gardening easier.

Tell us about your business.

As gardeners, we recognized the need for a better tomato cage (support system) than is currently available on the market. We designed and tested several prototypes over the years, and based on the positive feedback that we got from fellow gardeners, decided to produce them. We see this as appealing for patio, garden and rooftop growers, since it allows for vertical growing/support in small spaces. This product is designed to keep fruit off the ground, keep fruit cleaner and easier to harvest, save space as plants grow UP rather than OUT and eliminates the need to drive stakes, tie up the plant or work with stiff wire. We will have stackable extenders for the grower whose plants exceed 4 feet.

Tell us about your workspace, shop, or studio.

Currently we are assembling and packaging units for shipment out of our basement and our garage.

What inspires you?

We are inspired to produce a quality product. We believe that successful people take chances, work hard and get up one more time than they fall down or are knocked down.

What makes your business stand out?

We have designed a unique product that traditional gardeners as well as rooftop gardeners have been looking for and asking for.

What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur?

If you are passionate about a product, consider what you want to achieve, the risks you are willing to take, your available resources, target market, and how you will evaluate your results. Never give up.

What does American Made mean to you?

We live in the greatest country in the world. We believe in innovation, employment of our people, adding to our American system rather than pulling from it, and productivity which results in happier and more successful citizens.
