Tell us about your business.Forager Botanicals is a natural fragrance and beauty company focused on creating beautiful products using all natural ingredients. Proprietor, Casey Coyle, a Brooklyn graphic designer and art director has been working in the beauty industry for many years. When pregnant with her daughter Casey became turned off by the overpowering scents and harmful ingredients in many mainstream beauty products. When she was a little girl Casey used to make her own perfumes out of water and flower petals from her grandmothers garden. Casey longed for simpler more natural scents like these and developed the products for Forager for women seeking the same. Forager Botanicals also supports women's and environmental charities by donating a portion of proceeds.
Tell us about your workspace, shop, or studio. We have a small studio which we make all of our fragrances and beauty products located in Brooklyn. We would love to someday have a small shop or larger studio which we can invite our customers to.
What inspires you?The process for coming up with a new perfume is first finding inspiration, whether that be a favorite place, a trip you have taken or a childhood memory. Then there is the process of replicating that scent or that inspiration combining ingredients which can take anywhere from a month to a year to get just right. For me making perfume has a very meditative quality. I need complete silence in order to concentrate. So when I am in my studio crafting perfume or other product it is just me, my thoughts and many beautiful smells.
What makes your business stand out? There are many perfumes on the market but all natural perfumes are very rare. Many of todays mainstream fragrances and beauty products are scented with synthetic chemical compounds. There is little known about what effects these chemicals may have on your body. That’s why all of Forager Botanical products are all natural. We use only natural, organic and wildcrafted essential oils in all of our products. Our beautifully crafted fragrances are designed to closely embody the scents that mother nature has bestowed on us. My products are also all handmade by me including the watercolor labels and illustrations. And my wooden tops are handmade by a local craftsmen so the end product is truly artisanal.
What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur? My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to follow your passion. But it isn't going to be easy! Being a one man show takes a lot of hard work and requires one to wear many hats. My advice would be to focus on the things you are good at and find great people to partner to help with the rest.
What does American Made mean to you?American Made for me is all about a movement of American crafters and small business people who are sourcing local ingredients and supporting the U.S. economy by making things right here in the U.S. I am proud to be a local artisan crafting my product in Brooklyn, NY
