Alexis Drake Jewelry & Accessories
Tell us about your business.I never wore jewelry growing up, I was annoyed by extra things that took time to do while getting ready. During college I was having difficulty during a sculpture class and was asked to intern at a local jewelry design studio. The first day I showed up for work, my boss looked at me and asked where my sketchbook was with my designs. I explained that I didn't wear jewelry and didn't have any intention on wearing any. Needless to say I changed my mind and by that winter I was hosting my first trunk show with an entire collection of simple, elegant, wearable artwork...and yes, I started wearing jewelry -- jewelry that was effortless to wear, simple and stylish. Each piece is hand
Tell us about your workspace, shop, or studio.I work out of my home. I have a shop space in the garage and have taken over the basement guest bedroom as well as find inspiration in my classroom. As artists, we seem to always need to have a space to explore. I teach art to kindergarten through sixth graders and feel that because I am surrounded by growing artists that I am always inspired by their perspective and seeing our "art-world" through younger eyes.
What inspires you?I am obsessed with good design. Whether it is a brand, a space, a can opener, a piece of furniture, a home, it has to make sense. Visual space, the space we see and the space we remember is filled with images. Those images and experiences are what help us decide whether we like something and create a lasting image within our memories or not. We stop and spend time in spaces where we are surrounded by things that we are interested in. It could be a website, a catalog, a great coffee table book, a gallery exhibit, or a house. All of these are based upon visual interest and yes, good design. I design looks that are simple, inviting, sometimes whimisical, thoughtful and clean. The logo, the package, the overall feel of the "look" is what I make a priority in my design. That makes sense.

What does American Made mean to you?American made means working with American's to create a sustainable product for not only my consumer, but those economies that we all live in. If we want to grow our communities, we have to help support them, by buying local and when our own cities can't help us produce, finding another American city with the capabilities. The companies I have been working with have been around for years, have grown their business, by doing business with small businesses like Alexis Drake.
