Tell us about your business. My name is Rae Vittorelli, Founder of Cocoagraph – Chocolate Photograph Co. I discovered my love of craft at a young age. At the School of Visual Arts in New York I studied photography and printmaking through a vintage lens. At Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, I learned to translate these passions to tactile techniques, earning my BFA in 3D Fine Arts. After graduation, my whimsical creativity led me to explore the world of sugar arts and launch my first business. In 2011, I discovered I could combine fashion, photography and a vintage aesthetic in the best medium ever…chocolate! Thus, the Cocoagraph was created.
Tell us about your workspace, shop, or studio.Cocoagraph is still in its start-up phase, Cocoagraph rents space out of commercial kitchens to produce its unique confections.
What inspires you?The art of crafting things by hand. Incorporating all things beautiful and nostalgic into something as wonderful as a chocolate bar!
What makes your business stand out?Cocoagraph is a unique idea that I developed as a struggling artist. I am a self-taught chocolatier who started my love affair with chocolate by accident. My background is in the arts and when an injury from a car accident made it difficult to perform as a skilled goldsmith, I landed at an office job. Out of boredom, I started to play with my food…shortly after, I created the concept of Cocoagraph, chocolate photographs! My bars are totally unique and made by hand with high quality ingredients and the most sophisticated print-on-chocolate technique in the United States.
What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur?Never give up! Starting a business can be an extremely arduous process! But when things are going right the rewards and well worth the trouble. Watching my business (baby) grow has been amazing, I can't wait to see what happens next!
What does American Made mean to you?American Made is a great way to support and encourage the American artisanal movement. Its a way to celebrate the hand crafters!! American made is about putting a spot light on small businesses that are focusing on small batch quality products.
