Danielle McAllister & Aline Toller
Tell us about your business.MOMIKINI was born on the shores of Maui and raised on the sand in Newport Beach, CA. The line is designed for Mamas who's pre-baby bikinis are not cutting it but they are not ready for their Mothers one-piece. Danielle, a designer in the surf industry and a first time mom was on a family vacation in Maui with her 3 month old in tow, and no suit could be found that fit right and did not look like her moms swimsuit. After searching all over she decided she needed to create a bikini for a Mom a "MOMIKINI". Shortly after Danielle met Aline a mosaic artist and personal stylist from Rio De Jenario who just moved to the United States. The two joined together to reach for the American Dream! The girls often bring their 3 kids along on fabric trips to LA and Factory visits in Santa Ana. They trade baby sitting time to get the line produced. As Mothers they have a heart for children and this summer will host a camp with Salty Grom Surf Camp for children in the Orange County foster system.
Tell us about your workspace, shop, or studio. As many have, we started in our garage next to the washer and dryer. Now we have a loft attached to the house with our sewing machines, storage and desk. We also consider our local breakfast spot Sessions our office because they let us take up a table and parking spot for hours on end!
What inspires you? Most of all we pray for inspiration and look to God for direction and wisdom. We are inspired by our surroundings, our family and of course our children. The ocean and beach are huge inspirations. Getting out and playing in the sand and surf with our kids leads to a million design ideas to make life as a mom comfortable and attractive.
What makes your business stand out?We are the only swimwear brand deigned for Mamas. Our prints are all exclusively designed to be fresh and on fashion and we do not use any stock prints. The fits and styles of our swimwear bridge the gap from the juniors surf market to the women's wear market. Many customers that have bought our suits place second and third orders after trying them on.
What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur?Be determined and follow through. It is not purely talent that makes you successful, it is the amount of determination and hard work you put in. I have seen many talented people not find success. Yet I have seen people with half the talent fulfill their goals by being determined and working hard.
