Tell us about your business.

Revolution was started when I teamed up with my long time friend, and now business partner, Jeff Robbins with the goal of developing a business that would contribute positively to the community we grew up in. In 2008, in the midst of the Great Recession, we developed a plan to establish a landscaping company that would specialize in the design, installation, and ongoing maintenance of edible and eco-friendly landscapes. We decided to call the business Revolution Landscape because our philosophy went against the status quo. Since our inception our staff has grown from 2 to 10 and our team of designers, construction professionals, and horticulturalists share our passion for quality work and environmental sustainability. As we continue to grow and evolve we plan to continue helping residential clients, schools, non-profits, and hopefully public agencies create beautiful landscapes that give back to the earth and produce an abundance of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables.

Revolution operates out of a 3,500 sq. ft. yard space centrally located in the city of San Diego, only a few miles from where Jeff and I grew up. Our yard houses tools, compost and soil, work trucks, plants for our projects, and a small office space. In addition to general storage, we use the space to host team meetings, training days, and meetings with clients. The yard give us a place for our designers, installation crew, and maintenance team to meet with each other to discuss current projects, coordinate materials, and exchange information. Although the company was started by 2 of us, its really our amazing team of professionals that allows us to continue to innovate and offer the highest quality services to our clients.

What inspires you?

The smile that comes to a clients face when they take the first bite of a home grown fruit is what motivates me.

What makes your business stand out?

Our business stands out because we are the only comprehensive landscape service specifically focused on creating edible and eco-friendly landscapes. Revolution has helped homeowners, schools, and non-profits to realize the joy of gardening and reap the benefit of home-grown, organic produce. We never use toxic chemicals or synthetic fertilizers and are constantly looking for ways to make our operations more sustainable.

What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur?

If you have an idea, take the time to develop a business plan before diving in headfirst. Just like we develop plans for our landscapes, having a plan for your business is critical to ensuring that you stay on course and do not stray from your real goals and objectives. Once you have a plan, don't be afraid to take calculated risks and try new things. I think it is important to get out of your comfort zone sometimes in order to reach your full creative potential.

What does American Made mean to you?

American Made is more than simply being made in America. To me American Made is about the spirit of innovation. American Made is about being a leader in whatever business you are in. For Revolution Landscape, American Made is about not only offering the highest quality of service but also the highest quality workplace for our employees. Its about striving to source local materials and give back to the natural environment. American Made is about growing, producing, and sharing the bounty of an organic harvest.
