Mullein & Sparrow
Tell us about your business.Mullein & Sparrow is a combination of my love of herbal medicine, my experience with Ayurveda, and expertise as an esthetician. Born in Mumbai, I grew up with the principles of Ayurveda, an ancient system of traditional medicine. Mullein & Sparrow draws strongly on these principles, with the belief that true beauty naturally arises when a regimen of simple, daily acts of self-care are implemented. In 2009, tired of my career in corporate fashion, I took off on a journey backpacking through South America. There I encountered the plant-based healing cultures of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru and Colombia. My experiences with natural medicine and holistic health inspired me to lead a more pure and simple life and rekindled my interest in Ayurveda. I realized it's possible to return to natural state of health & beauty no matter where we live-even New York City. Upon returning to New York, I left the fashion industry to study the science of skincare and start Mullein & Sparrow.
Tell us about your workspace, shop, or studio.Mullein & Sparrow was created in my home studio where everything is hand-crafted in small batches. I turned a spare bedroom in my apartment into an herbal oasis, where I not only store and make my products, but also where I brainstorm and experiment with new product ideas.
What inspires you?Herbs inspire me! Did you know that mullein is an herb for asthma and lung problems? Mullein is the first herb I ever learned, because I've always had some lung issues; it made me delve deeper into herbal medicine. I wanted to create a line that blends the healing power of herbs with the Ayurvedic principles of daily self-care. I love the quality control aspect - I'm able to make every product by hand, in small batches, which ensures that my customers have the best quality possible. I'm interested in bringing a sense of luxury to the everyday, and my products reflect that with their clean, timeless design.
What makes your business stand out?Mullein & Sparrow products are handcrafted - the ultimate in luxury. Each herb, oil, resin, and clay is selected for its unique and specific property. As a licensed esthetician, I understand how skin works and what it needs to be healthy and beautiful. As an herbalist, I know how herbs work, and which ones will be best for specific conditions. Mullein & Sparrow was the natural outcome of my desire to combine my knowledge of both skincare and herbs. My background in design also comes in handy and I've been meticulous in perfecting both the form and the function.
What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur?I'd say don't listen to the voice in your head that says you can't do it - listen to the voice in your heart that says you can.
What does American Made mean to you?I'm inspired by the old pioneering spirit that built this country. I think good products reflect those basic American values of hard work and integrity - if something isn't right, I'll fix it. I stand behind my products and also behind my customers, and I want to make sure they have the best experience possible. That sense of hard work and integrity also drives me to use the purest, best products - I want to build a company of impeccable standards.
