f. is for frank
Tell us about your business.f. is for frank’s handmade collection of jewelry has a textural, sculptural and modern feel that is derived from the artists’ background in designing and manufacturing architectural elements. While their jewelry reflects organic shapes and objects in nature, they also enjoy making a huge statement with scale. Cast pewter is their medium of choice. Pieces are also offered in 24-karat gold plate. f. is for frank was established in 2007 and is a collaboration between Shannah Frank and Casey Melton. In 2009, the duo decided to take a departure from designing custom architectural elements and created a line of jewelry. Shannah and Casey are continuing to explore ways to create the most unique and innovative jewelry while staying true to their own design aesthetic. Their degrees in sculpture and metalsmithing and experience in architectural design is evidenced by the way in which their jewelry achieves a perfect balance between art and function.
Tell us about your workspace, shop, or studio. We have a space in the design district in Dallas TX. Recently we decided to share the space with interior designers. We have a little showroom with all our designs up front and welcome visitors. Our hours are a little irregular cause I (Casey) have small kids and Shannah teachers yoga so call first. Our casting equipment and tool are in the back. We have a big dock door that we can open and when the weather is perfect we can bring the outside in. Sometimes we will bring our babies and dogs to the studio. It can be a creative zoo at times.
What inspires you?Life is one big inspiration. We struggle with pushing the envelope with our designs and creating more sellable designs so in each collection we try to have both. We also try not to follow trends but set trends and that usually happens when we design what we feel not what we see.
What makes your business stand out? Each piece we create is a wearable piece of art. Each piece has a story and made with love.
What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur? There is nothing better than doing what you love.
What does American Made mean to you?Pride. We take pride in having a product not only made in America but made in our Dallas TX studio by either me or Shannah.
