I have been sewing for most of my life. My mom taught me some basics and I went on to study costume design and construction for the theater. I took a break to raise a family. Then, a little over a year ago a friend asked me if I would make her wedding dress. For years I had turned down brides, but this time I said yes. I knew that if this was the direction I should take, that God would make it clear. He made it clear quickly by giving me several other brides and opportunities. When a client comes with photos and ideas, I love helping her choose fabric and refine her dream dress design to be uniquely hers. Taking her measurements and drafting a mock-up; Working together to get details just right; Seeing her eyes light up when she sees her gown coming together. These are the things that make it special. I look forward to adding a storefront and having a more community presence. I want to be a "go to" shop for women to get a quality dress with a perfect fit.

Tell us about your workspace, shop, or studio.

My studio is in my home. It is bright and functional. I have several sewing machines and shelves of fabric. As a single mom of three kids, I enjoy the fact that I can work from home while doing what I love. I dream of a huge ceiling to floor mirror for my clients to see the full effect of their gown, but in the meantime, my friendly and relaxed atmosphere is the backdrop for fittings and consultations.

What inspires you?

Like many creative people, I find inspiration in all kinds of places. I am inspired by photos of other designer's gowns. I love fabrics and am inspired by texture and drape. I enjoy seeing work spaces and processes of other designers. The creative process ranges from typical to unique and one-of-a-kind. Inspiration comes also from the client; her personality, shape, and style.

What makes your business stand out?

S&G Sewing Studio is personal and friendly yet professional. "Made to order" and "custom" can be intimidating but my goal is to help women feel special and part of the process. A gown that is made for you will make you look and feel fantastic and that sets you apart. That makes S&G Sewing Studio stand out.

What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur?

Find others around the country who do what you dream if doing. Study them. Find inspiration in them. See their business not as competition, but as inspiration. Refine your concept and never stop aspiring to create your dream.

What does American Made mean to you?

Beyond the obvious "not outsourced" idea, American Made means: ownership; local; small business; personal; quality. I think there is pride in owning something that is made with American hands. It becomes special and worth more. This is especially important for bridal and special occasion dresses.
