Skyler Veek is the owner and creator of Lucky Bear Soap Co. in Tillamook, Oregon. Since childhood she has had a keen sense of smell and has always loved outdoor aromas. She spent years researching the healing powers of herbs & plants and their pure oils. Aromatherapy gives her the joy of experimenting with science and her passion for art, photography and design comes through in her product labels and packaging. She has learned to take the Pure Essential Oils and blend them into lotions, massage oils, soaking salts and sprays for the body, home, car and pets. In 2012, Skyler launched a new line of organic olive oil soaps. Each bar of soap features the rescue story of Lucky Bear, an abandoned Jersey bull calf she rescued in 2009 and nursed back to health. Lucky's face is proudly the brand logo. Profits go toward Lucky Bear's food, bedding, fencing and barn repair. All of the organic and natural product ingredients are healthy for our bodies, pets and the planet.

Tell us about your workspace, shop, or studio.

I work out of my house that overlooks the green mountains on the Oregon Coast. I hear birds chirping and dogs snoring while I work. My soap factory has taken over my large kitchen and most closets in the house. I have a small studio space that houses my essential oils, displays, signs and tables for shows. I grow organic herbs in my glass greenhouse next to my garden. I'm fortunate to be able to work from my home so that my kids and pets still have "access" to Mom on a daily basis.

What inspires you?

I am inspired daily by Oregon's green nature that surrounds me. I love nurturing plants and watching food grow in my organic garden and greenhouse at the edge of the forest. My rescued pets and my creative kids inspire new products and herbal scent combinations.

What makes your business stand out?

Lucky Bear Soap Co. stands out for many reasons. I use only the highest quality organic and natural ingredients found. My products are all handmade in small batches by me with love. I get to combine my love for animals, my passion for creating and love of plant knowledge in my business. Each Lucky Bear Soap Co. product features Lucky Bear's cute brown face on the label. Each purchase directly makes a difference. People love hearing Lucky Bear's rescue story and can't believe that I have a 1,500- pound pet bull. Lucky Bear just turned 5 this month. With daily love, Lucky Bear proves to be kind and gentle. He has been a great teaching tool. My book, The True Story of Lucky Bear has been a great teaching tool in classrooms across the country. I'm able to give back to my rural community by teaching classes on essential oils, herbs and natural cleaning products. Sharing knowledge of the power of plants and teaching alternative methods to harmful chemicals in the household is rewarding.

What advice would you give an aspiring creative entrepreneur?

I tell people to explore and discover what you are truly passionate about. Find that thing that makes your soul come alive. Once you are following your passion, the money will come.

What does American Made mean to you?

American Made represents my livelihood. We must support our country's people buy purchasing locally grown food, locally handmade art and products made close to our homes. American made means donating locally made products to community fundraisers.
