Sloan + Tommy
American Made Since 2012
I have always had a slight obsession with mathematics, drawing lines, and geometric shapes. I started to combine these shapes with subtle, monotone colors. My shop currently has clay pendants but I am working on molds for concrete along with designing prints for small bags and totes. The goal is to have my new pieces in the shop before the Holiday season and to have our own e-commerce shop on sloanandtommy.com. As Sloan + Tommy grows, I hope not only to work with more animal shelters like APA, but to find new and creative ways to do so.
What makes your business unique? The week before I was set to open shop, we found out that Sloan had osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and the prognosis was grim. We immediately amputated his leg with the tumor and began chemotherapy. The first few months were extremely difficult for me, and as I did my best to be with Sloan every second I could, sitting next to him and working on the shop was the perfect distraction. Due to the high cost of Sloan's treatment, I thought I may not be able to donate to an animal shelter. It didn't take long before I realized that it was more important than ever for me to help connect people with homeless pets. Austin Pets Alive has helped make Austin the nation's largest no kill city and APA's slogan is "Helping People Help Pets." If I can help do that, while designing and creating a product I am proud of, I'm living my dream. Osteosarcoma is typically terminal but it has been 10 months now and Sloan appears to be cancer free!
What's the best business advice you've received?"It takes time". Starting your own small business can be overwhelming because there are so many details involved in the big picture. It is hard work, but if you take a deep breath and remember that it takes time you'll see your vision come together.
