The Tea Rex is a small business that strives to create fun, functional handmade goods for women and babies.

Tell us about your business.

The Tea Rex was founded in 2010 and to this day remains a one-gal show!! I was always sewing things for my friends and through their encouraging words I decided to take a leap of faith and open a shop on Etsy! The styles I have created over the years have been continually evolving into what you see present day. I love creating scarves and accessories, because who doesn't need a great go-to scarf? My designs have been shifting lately toward baby items, as I have a serious baby fever and addiction to anything cute, modern, practical and functional for babies. I draw most of my inspiration from fabric. I feel like I have a really good eye for pairing fabrics in a way that people normally wouldn't think to pair. My dream would be to open a brick and mortar store that would sell fabric, my handmade goods, and other local artisans creations. Baby steps though :)

What makes your business stand out?

I take a lot of custom orders so people can get exactly what they want. I listen to my customer feedback and try to accommodate their needs. I don't have a huge mark up on my items as I try to be affordable. I never make a design that I wouldn't wear which makes my shop a true reflection of me, my personality and my style.

What's the best business advice you've received?

My friend Amber, who is also my website creator and my unofficial manager/advise-giver extraordinaire, always tells me that I'm the only one standing in the way of becoming big. She always tells me I need to get out there and get in craft shows, markets and events. Basically, I need to take risks to see rewards.
