Son of a Sailor Jewelry + Supply
Tell us about your business. The birth of the brand is inextricably tied to our own relationship--from the first day we met we began creating together. As our relationship grew, Son of a Sailor was the organic result. In what seems to be our typical style of doing everything at once, we began our business in the midst of becoming engaged to be married and buying our first home! We first began selling jewelry in May of 2011, and since then have seen tremendous growth and excitement behind the brand. We recently introduced Son of a Sailor Supply, a gift-based assortment featuring men's accessories and other handmade keepsakes which share the same signature aesthetic of bold color and geometry as our first line. With a truly collaborative spirit, William + I continue to design, and plan to continue adding unique and special items to our offering. As we bring employees into the fold and grow the Son of a Sailor family, we hope to create meaningful employment. We believe that our brand is based on relationships!
What makes your business stand out?Son of a Sailor brings a unique perspective that wouldn't be possible without the point of view and life experience of both of us. William's time in the navy, his travels around the world, and his playful and genuine generosity informs the way he sees the world and designs products. My former career in art galleries and as a photographer gives me a curatorial eye, and my love of math and geometry is instilled in my design. William is thoughtful and meticulous, and I am prolific and quickly inspired. We create a balance together that results in exciting design and unique ideas. From the moment we met, creating and designing was a part of our story. Son of a Sailor couldn't exist without either one of us, but it also can't help but exist when we are together. It's a living, breathing thing that we are very excited to see grow.
What's the best business advice you've received? My mother tells me, in almost every applicable scenario, that "the universe is unfolding as it should." This quote, from Max Ehrmann's poem, "Desiderata," allows me to understand that we work hard to plan and set things into motion, but ultimately the universe will do what it should do! It's very calming.
