Independent Style Market (ISM)

American Made Since 2010

Indie Style Market is a collective retail shop giving a brick & mortar presence and access to local customers to indie designers who sell online.

Tell us about your business.

Indie Style Market began life as a handmade show sponsored by the Memphis Melange Etsy Team, a group of 200+ makers from all over the Midsouth. The team formed Nov 2010 and our first show was the very next month. Since then we've produced 5 other events including a highly successful Indie Style Market Popup @ Overton Square last December where we sold over $60k in handmade products in just 12 days! ISM is about leveraging the power of the crowd to make possible things that are hard to do alone. For a single indie designer to operate a retail store will require a great deal of capital and lot of time spent away from the designing and making things. By banding together, our team has been able to open our first permanent shop & studio in the Broad Ave Arts District. Our goal is to build the indie design community of the Midsouth by providing a venue offering information and access to customers for those making products.

What makes your business stand out?

Indie Style Market is unique among retail ventures because our primary goal is to grow sales for each of the indie makers participating - not so much growing the revenues for the store. Everyone involved has their own indie brand of handmade products that they want to grow. By using a participating member model, we can offer much higher commission rates than traditional retailers. The admin team provides the leadership in running the store. We are also responsible for special events, marketing both the store and each participating maker with print and online media.

What's the best business advice you've received?

Go for it! Waiting to develop the perfect business plan or find the perfect location can become an excuse over time. At some point you have to take a leap of faith and get out there!
