Tell us about your business. When I purchased my first loom in 1983 and started LOOMINUS HANDWOVENS, I never would have imagined that I’d still be designing after twenty years, still challenged by this mysterious, fluctuating world of textile art. The evolution and refinement of my work is evident, when I review my first rough pieces off the loom and see where these years of designing have carried me. I’ve taken many roads over the years: fine craft shows, not so fine craft shows, studio sales, retail, wholesale, trade shows, women’s wearable art, men’s luxury accessories, children and Home collections. The business of selling a finely crafted handmade scarf or jacket has itself become a creative challenge. Fortunately, I appreciate the art of merging business with art and fashion and reaching and stretching to my creative limits within my chosen medium of weaving. Our presence online is becoming more important and reaching out through social networking is the way Loominus Woodstock will continue to Evolve!
What makes your business stand out?I've designed the BARNEYS NY men's scarf COLLECTION for over 20 years, and demonstrate our weaving process as part of their ARTISAN DAY event for many years. Loominus is unique because we love what we do and love the beautiful product that we hand make in our small town in the Hudson Valley of NY. We've stayed local, cottage-industry based, an extended family of talented, skilled weavers and workers for so many years, most of us working with Loominus for over 15 years.. Loominus has enabled many women to stay at home and be great parents, as well as earn a living. We are excited together, appreciate the ability to create great ART-TO-WEAR, still made on hand looms, a vital part of the community of Woodstock, NY.
What's the best business advice you've received? The best business advice I've ever heard is to persevere! Find your strongest market and reach out.. there are so many avenues to pursue.. Believe in yourself and enpower yourself to make it happen!
