Tell us about your business.

I'm a Boston born artist, where I have studied Illustration, Interior and Graphic Design. I have been researching for a medium that I felt would enable me to create and apply my experience and passion for good design. This led me to designing floorcloths and environmental decor. I begin my creative process by sketching in an old hand- bound book. The typography, as well as the craftsmanship of an old book, inspires me. From here I develop my color scheme and then enlarge my sketch to a template or I'll draw directly on a prepared background. I work with a heavy weight duck cloth, that I prepare with gesso. I paint the background with quality floor or exterior paint and do the details with artist acrylics. I finish with several coats of polyurethane. I set up shop in a renovated textile mill for artists in Lowell, MA. I hope to see my business grow by reaching out to local designers and shops, participating in juried artist craft fairs and through my blogging and online venues.

What makes your business stand out?

Floorcloths are not a new craft and actually have traditional design applications. These designs are historical and are modeled from earlier colonial times, often with pastoral or nautical themes. This is a wonderful way to create for period work or to draw from, for inspiration. I approach my designs with a perspective that has been inspired by my study, experience and understanding of design. I admire the complex as well as the minimalist work and the beauty of the nature. I often choose organic forms and blend them with geometrical elements. My work reflects these inspirations and this is what makes my work and business unique.

What's the best business advice you've received?

The best advise I have gleaned and received is to fear nothing and to plan for success.
