Paper and Oak
Tell us about your business. For years, I wanted to create a business that would allow flexibility, creativity and tons of fun. That is how Paper and Oak began, shortly after my son was born. Paper and Oak began in March 2013 with an etsy site. Then a couple months later, a handful of illustrations were placed in a local children's store, and now I am framing my prints and dropping the product off with my son. My cousin, who started her own interior design business in Baltimore, Purple Bike Design, recently created an ecommerce site, and a few of Paper and Oak illustrations can be found there too. After a lot of research, I decided to create a new website and ecommerce site with Squarespace. I am currently creating Amazon Product Ads, Google Adwords, and I signed up with Google Adsense. I plan to market my product to children's stores, create a blog, create more illustrations, and soon, books, fabric and sculptures.
What makes your business stand out?I think that there are so many unique businesses out there, they are all very inspiring. I really love it when everything is produced locally, with hopes of improving our economy. I think that production work is actually a lot of fun, and I love working on the computer creating designs. I have been making art seriously since 1999 creating photographs, sculptures, site-specific installations, non-site installations, video, drawings, and sometimes I work with sound. I love making things.
What's the best business advice you've received? To keep making things.
