Jenn Clark & Nathan Clark
Tell us about your business.Wondermade started as a gift: For Christmas a few years ago I gave Jenn a candy thermometer and the recipe for marshmallows. It may have been a risky gift but it worked out because she loved it. Our first batch was passion fruit and they were incredible. We both liked marshmallows well enough before, but never really how incredibly tasty and fun marshmallows were supposed to be. We kept cooking them for friends and family. Soon we had people asking if they could order some. So we decided to take the plunge and spent a year working on process and packaging. Selling an artisan candy is great experience. We get to think of unique flavors like Bourbon, Peppermint or Wildflower Honey. The real magic comes when we put a Bourbon Wondermade marshmallow in someone's hands and see their face light up. Ultimately that's an experience we'd like to give everyone around the world.
What makes your business stand out?We use superior ingredients and beautiful packaging for our marshmallows. But we know lots of people could do that. What we think really sets us apart is the 'why' behind Wondermade. We know when people buy our marshmallows that they're not just giving us their money, but that they're letting us be a part of their life. So often our marshmallows turn into gifts or wedding favors or weekend treats with loved ones. So we committed at the start to build Wondermade in a way that would love our customers as much as they'd love the people who would share in the Wondermade experience.
What's the best business advice you've received?Make the product you'd love to use, or in our case, eat. We eat marshmallows just about every day. We've got four kids and they love these marshmallows and not a day goes by when we're not incredibly proud to make something our kids can love as much as we do. Granted, we're making candy so that's not a hard sell.
