Tell us about your business.

After graduating from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in 1999, I interned at the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. I studied under the director of dermatology and was simply amazed with the efficacy of Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of skin problems. Why weren't there more safe topical Chinese herbal products available to the public in America? By 2008, I was specializing in the treatment of skin conditions in my private acupuncture & herbal practice and I began formulating topical herbal preparations to address the needs of my patients. Over the next few years I developed unique topical herbal products for psoriasis, eczema, acne, rosacea and other skin imbalances. Currently, I am merging my skin care product company with my private practice to create a holistic dermatology clinic where I can craft custom skin care products for customers. In the near future, I plan to formulate a line of veterinary dermatology products as well.

What makes your business stand out?

"Zi Zai" is Mandarin and it means "to be free of restrictions and limitations." At Zi Zai Dermatology, it is our mission to help our customers achieve freedom from the skin issues that limit their quality of life. Our herbal formulations are based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, we recognize that the same illness can present itself in various ways depending on the individual (i.e., not every case of eczema looks or feels the same). We know that every person's skin is unique – it deserves personalized care. So Zi Zai offers variations of products so each person can choose the product that best matches their skin's individual needs. Zi Zai gives the customer choices…choices give you freedom.

What's the best business advice you've received?

The best business advice I have ever received is also the best life advice I have ever received: "If it's not the path of the heart...it's not the path."
