The Rooster & Two Chicks

American Made Since 2013

Arlene Coyne & Barbara Buchnowski & Richard Smith

Buffalo, New York
The Rooster & Two Chicks is a bakery and eclectic gift store. We take everyday items and make them into something you have never dreamed of.

Tell us about your business.

The Rooster & Two Chicks was inspired one night when three high school friends met for drinks after not seeing each other for over 20 years. We found each other on Facebook, only to discover all three of us had re-located back to Buffalo, NY within the past year from various cities (NYC, Dallas, New Orleans). As we discussed our futures, we imagined a segue from corporate America, to a more satisfying work life utilizing our talents. Rick suggested to open a retail store, and so it was to be. We are an equally owned partnership. Rick creates many of the gift ideas in our store and is our visionary, Arlene is our "baketress" and Barbara is in charge of sales, social media, and overall customer experience coordination. I see our business evolving to online sales, and doing custom work by request. For example we had a gentlemen bring in a penguin umbrella and requested that The Rooster make a floor lamp out of it. The Rooster far exceeded the customer's expectations.

What makes your business stand out?

What makes the The Rooster & Two Chicks unique is the story behind our inception, the distinct skill set we each bring to the business, and the belief we have in each other. We share in Rick's vision to create a totally new, contemporary shopping experience with imaginative home made baked goods, and re-purposed, functional, fun home products. We take inspiration from Rick's NYC retail store "Its A Mod Mod World" which he closed after 9/11.

What's the best business advice you've received?

It's not about the money. Work with the highest integrity and have passion in what you do, and the money will follow.
